Update from the National Youth Organizers (CYMK-UOY)

The two National Youth Organizers – Christina Kowalenko and Yuri Hladio – have been busy advertising the upcoming youth program at the USRL convention, meeting with youth in the Winnipeg area, and helping National CYMK executive with the Shoe & Boot Collection for Help Us Help the Children amongst other things. Here are a few highlights below. Also check out the NEW blog for updates!

Asking for Your Prayers…

On Sunday June 11, 2017 at the Eastern Eparchy Family Celebrations, Yuri and Christina greeted his Grace, Bishop Andriy, with the following requests, in the spirit of unity.

Ваше приосвященство, владико Андрію – вітаємо вас із святом всіх святих та з родиннем свято нашої східноЇ Єпархії.

As one of the National Youth Organizers of CYMK-Ukrainian Orthodox Youth, I [Christina] have been encouraged and inspired this past year by your genuine love for young people, and everyone here in the eparchy.

Life has changed, our world has changed, but my experience growing up has taught me the importance of a developing a vibrant youth program across Canada, where young people feel like they belong when they come to Church.

Young people are not the future but the present. Young people are no more and no less important than any other generation. Just as every Dido has a role and duty in his family, so too does each young person.

Which means when we try to engage young people, we are engaging their entire families- parents, grandparents, god-parents, and that young people are children and grandchildren of everyone in the parish! [And that each of them needs a role] - editor's note.

And so we ask your prayers:

  1. That each parish cherish each young person as their own child – that no one be left feeling invisible

  2. To bless and strengthen our parish priests as they encourage relationships and regular fellowship

  3. And finally, for quiet courage for our people to talk to one another, and to care for one another

[Yuri] As National Youth Organizer with Christina, we have met and interacted with many young people already this year across Canada. We have seen that there is excitement and enthusiasm among them to meet one another and to participate in the life of the Church.

So, it is through your prayers, as the spiritual father of these parishes, that we hope to continue providing young people with an engaging environment to explore the Ukrainian culture and live their Orthodox faith.

Successful Fundraising

In preparation for this convention, the organizers worked with the National Executive to put together a team that would look for sponsorships. With their mentorship, the team successfully fundraised $15,750 from the SUS Foundation of Canada ($7,000), the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Canada Foundation ($5,000), the Taras Shevchenko Foundation ($3,000), and National TYC-USRA ($750) out of the $20,000 goal! The sponsorship team and National Executive are sincerely grateful to these bodies for their support!

CYMK-UOY welcomes new youth in Oshawa

In March 2017, Christina and National CYMK president, treasurer, and advisor, Liza, Taras, and Natalka, joined the youth at St. John the Baptist for their inaugural meeting. With direction from the National CYMK chaplain, Fr. Bohdan Hladio, who is also their parish priest, the youth already had a busy season of activities!

Here are photos of their executive taking their oath, and another with Christina at the 2017 Fiesta Week “Odessa” Pavilion show.

For Christina, what is most inspiring in this parish is that even though only 2-3 youth (of 10) are of Ukrainian descent, that they all take Ukrainian dance lessons together! “What was even more wonderful to see was the quality of performance considering most of their members had only started dancing this year!”

Congratulations to the parish for re-starting the local after 25 years! And a sincere thank you to Fr. Hladio for his hard word, initiative, and leadership!
